"Mores" is the seventh episode of Season 2 of Dark Days. It is the twentieth episode overall. It premiered on August 28, 2020.

Synopsis[]

"Warren and others must play by Pierce's rules. Virgil makes a plan, while Chad and Erika make a stunning discovery."

Plot[]

Warren walks down the streets of the safe-zone, looking around and nodding at people as they greet him. His face is calm, and neutral, and his speed is slow. The wind blows in his hair. The sun beats down on him. There’s a knife sheathed in his belt, under his shirt. The knife Monica had given him.

He slows to a stop in front of the rundown home owned by the Lestrades.

The residence of Tobias.

The office of Chris.

The prison of Gina.

He takes a breath, and starts forward, going up to the elevated porch, standing before the door, and knocking.

He waits a moment.

The door opens, and he’s greeted by a tall man in a flannel. A red one. Tobias. The man sighs. “You’re the new Dotson twin, right?”

Warren forces a pursed lip smile, and he invites himself in without a word.

Tobias watches him enter, and he shuts the door. “You got a problem or something, kid? You can’t just walk into whoever’s house you fucking want.”

“Alright, look… I’m just gonna cut to the chase.” Warren turns to face him, hands on his hips. “I’m aware of what you’re doing. Please, leave Gina alone.”

The Lestrade patriarch grins, taking a step forward and looming over Warren. “... what’re you talking about, brat? I’m doing nothing to my daughter--”

“It’s pretty obvious you’re hurting her. I’ve known Gina for years.” Warren glares at him. “So, I need you to cut the shit, and stop hurting my--”

He’s cut off as Tobias delivers a swift punch to his face. He yelps and stumbles back -- and the man gives him another, sending him against the wall. Before Warren can recover, the man has a hand around his throat, and he shoves him against the wall. Blood starts to run down Warren’s face, from his nose and lip.

“You ain’t my boss, boy. You’re no leader -- you mean shit to me.” Tobias tightens his hold, glaring and spitting through grit teeth. “You think you can just tell me what I can and can’t do? Huh??”

Shck.

Tobias’ grip loosens, and he looks down.

Warren keeps the knife firmly pressed into the man’s stomach.

And in an instant, he rips it out.

Blood spills out of the wound, staining his shirt and spurting through, getting onto Warren’s clothes as well. Tobias drops Warren, and the young man composes himself quickly. He watches Tobias stumble back before tripping and falling over, trying to cover his wound.

But he just looks up at Warren with a smirk, and he starts chuckling. “Y-You think you can kill m-me…?!”

Warren just looks down at him, no pity or remorse in his expression, though slight shock as he looks at the bloody knife in his hand.

Tobias lays his head back, and he lets out a large sigh, before his eyes close. His chest continues to rise and fall slowly.

He’s unconscious, and bleeding heavily.

Warren shivers a bit, puts the knife back in his belt, and steps out of the home, leaving Tobias behind.

The streets of Birmingham’s inner city are narrow and desolate. The abandoned mall sits like a colosseum in the middle of the aftermath of chaos. Janice leads her ten fellow survivors down the slanted road, going right for the large, black mall -- a gigaplex. The multi-story building practically screams “loot inside,” though it provides a very, very foreboding feel.

Virgil sighs, looking up at the building and feeling quite the ominous atmosphere from it. “... that’s the place, huh?”

“We don’t know what’s gonna be inside.” Janice calls out to everyone. “There could be people, or walkers… maybe, somehow, even worse. Just be ready for anything.”

As they get closer to the building, Kylie nudges Alex. “You sure you’re up for this?”

Alex readies a knife and looks at her. “Are you?”

Kylie smiles and raises a pistol. “For once, yes. I’m actually sure of myself.”

Alex chuckles a bit and nods. “This is gonna be one… very interesting, very tiring day.”

“Tell me about it… running around, probably killing things, looting stuff, killing more things, lugging around heavy bags, killing even more things…” Kylie shakes her head. “Did I mention killing things yet?”

“No, I don’t think you did.” Alex jokes.

Kylie grins and looks over her shoulder, frowning as she notices Gina away from the group, still following but keeping distance. Her head is down, and she’s frowning slightly.

“... I know you’re worried about her, but we’ll be fine, okay?” Alex reassures, noticing where Kylie is looking. “We’re not gonna leave her, or hurt her. We’ll be there to protect her, even if we don’t entirely know what’s going on.”

Kylie nods, and looks back ahead. “I hope you’re right…”

Finally, the eleven survivors make it to the doors of the mall. It’s dark inside the massive building, and a few straggling walkers could be seen inside. Janice signals for everyone to stay back a few steps, as she approaches the door and leans against it. The few muffled snarls she can hear are enough to tell her there’s very few undead in the area.

“Be ready to fight.” The woman says, before she reels back and kicks the glass.

It shatters.

A few walkers turn to the noise, as the survivors enter through the shattered window frame and into the dark, decrepit mall.

Immediately, Janice approaches one nearby and brings out her knife, slicing it across the head and sicking the blade through the skull. She pulls it out with ease and it drops dead. Kylie and Alex pass her, as Kylie knocks her pistol into one walker’s head, sending it down, where she stomps right on its temple, crushing the skull.

She turns around, and holds up a finger to her lips.

Alex thrusts his knife into one walker, but another grapples onto him, and he fights it.

“Over here!” Harold calls out from the side, readying a knife of his own. Alex turns and thrusts the biter off him with his one arm, and Harold catches it with a well timed stab to the back of its head, killing it.

Two more walkers shamble from within, just as Chad and Erika enter to dispatch them, both delivering stab wounds to their skulls. They both separate to handle a few more, and Virgil watches them. He bites his lip.

Someone pats him on the back from behind. Trent. “C’mon man, get in gear.”

He walks ahead of Virgil, and lifts up a hammer from his belt, bringing the head down onto a biter’s skull and killing it in one swift blow.

Virgil snaps to attention and heads forward, going up towards Chad, who grapples with a walker.

He stops, and he watches.

Chad swivels around and takes notice, but instead of calling for help, he manages to get the upper hand, pushing the walker off with a shove to the chest, and swinging his knife around to catch it through its undead jaw.

When he pulls the knife out, he turns and glares at Virgil. “What the hell man?! You’re just gonna watch??”

Virgil just stares at him, then he turns away to approach an oncoming walker, which he grabs by the shirt and stabs a knife into its head. He growls a bit and pushes it down, pulling the knife out and stabbing it in the face a few more times.

Chad’s anger subsides and he steps back. “J-Jesus man, calm down…”

Virgil looks back up at him, stopping, his face covered in the blood of the walker he had just mutilated.

“Hey.” Janice suddenly takes his knife from him. “If you’re gonna act that immature, you’re gonna be done here. Get in together, or go home.”

Virgil glares up at her, but he sighs, standing up.

The walkers have been dealt with, for now.

“I’m sorry… I don’t know what got into me.” Virgil rubs his temple.

“It looked like you got seriously pissed for no reason…” Chad approaches. “... you okay man?”

“Shut up.” Virgil scoffs. “News flash -- I kinda still don’t like you?”

Chad blinks in surprise, and he’s about to respond when Erika steps in. “If this is about the cult, save it. Being petty will just get us in danger in here.”

She walks away, and Chad and Virgil look after her.

“I dunno what she’s talking about, but she’s right.” Janice nods, offering Virgil his knife back. “Put aside whatever differences you have, and focus on keeping everyone in here alive.”

Virgil quietly takes the knife and puts it away, before he turns and walks off.

Kevin walks around slowly, looking at the carnage. “... damn, these bodies really hit the floor.”

“There could be more, though…” Beth notes, looking around. “This place is huge, there could be tons hidden anywhere, and we need to be careful.”

“Beth’s right -- just cause we can’t see a herd, nor can we hear a herd… doesn’t mean there isn’t a herd.” Janice agrees. “There could be any number of those things in here. Stay alert, stay as quiet as you can, do NOT go off on your own. Sound good? Spread out in pairs or small groups, loot what you can, and meet back at the door in about… let’s say, an hour. If shit hits the fan, get back here sooner. Sound good?”

There’s nods and murmurs of agreement.

Janice smirks. “Alright then -- for the veterans, we know the drill. For the newbies, show us whatcha got.”

As everyone groups up and disperses, looking around the entry area of the mall, Alex looks up some escalators with a grin. “I think the food court might be up there…”

Harold stands next to him with a smile. “You wanna go… loot a Subway? Eat some stale ass sandwiches together?”

“Is that a date?” Alex jokes, chuckling a bit.

Harold shrugs. “It is if you want it to be.”

Warren’s heart races as he suddenly bursts into Pierce’s office, his brother sitting at his table and nibbling on kiwi slices as he fills out a sheet of paper. He quickly looks up, and his eyes widen at the sight of his twin covered in blood.

“W-Warren, what--”

“Tobias Lestrade tried to strangle me, so I stabbed him.” He cuts off Pierce, speaking bluntly.

Silence hangs between them.

“... you… what?”

“He’s abusing his daughter. My friend.” Warren presses. “He attacked me when I confronted him. So I stabbed him.”

Pierce’s breathing picks up. “... i-is he dead…?”

“... I-I don’t know.” Warren sighs. “I left him… to bleed. But, if he’s not dead… I want us to arrest him. Or, exile him.”

“Hold on, you STABBED him?” Pierce holds up a hand. “Did… he really attack you?”

Warren nods. “I don’t blame you for not knowing he abuses Gina, since we’ve only been here for a few days -- but news flash, he abuses Gina. She’s not the same. Haven’t you noticed?”

“What do you mean?” Pierce narrows his eyes.

“Pierce, the Gina I know is fierce. Brutal. Powerful. She can fight, and she can hold her own.” Warren continues. “She doesn’t wear dresses, or politely follow orders. She doesn’t submit to other people, and come off as shy and afraid. This is NOT the Gina Lestrade I’ve come to call one of my best friends. We need to do something about this.”

Pierce folds his arms, biting his lip. “... Warren, if you’re asking me to go back and finish the job--”

“We’ve both already established… we don’t have to kill to get our points across.” Warren exhales. “Look… he’s scum. And he deserves to die. But instead, if we can’t kill him… then let’s either exile him, or lock him up.”

“Why’re you so gung-ho about following my rules now after you went and stabbed him?!” Pierce retorts.

“Because, even though we both don’t like to kill, even if we both have… never killed… that piece of shit deserves to suffer.” Warren pulls out the knife and tosses it on the table, splattering blood across the papers. “Besides -- if we don’t play by your rules, then there’s no peace.”

Pierce eyes his brother. “... the public doesn’t know about this. They don’t know. So what should we do?”

“We let the public decide.” Warren nods. “We arrest him… and instead of… killing him to force control over everyone… we’ll let it be known what he did. And we can let everyone else decide what to do with him. To keep the peace.”

Pierce nods. “To keep the peace.”

It isn’t much later when Pierce bursts into the Lestrade home with Decklan, and they find Tobias on the ground, lying awake, with Chris looming over him, stitching up his wound.

“BACK UP!” Decklan shouts, forcing the doctor away from his brother.

Chris watches in surprise and slight anger as Pierce rolls Tobias over, the man groaning in pain, and he ties his hands together behind his back. “Tobias Lestrade… you’re being placed under arrest for the abuse of one Gina Lestrade, and the assault of one Warren Dotson. Try and resist, and I won’t hesitate to have Decklan execute you on the spot.”

Tobias just smirks as he’s pulled up to his feet, and Pierce forces him out of the house.

“Hey, what the hell?!” Chris tries to go after them, but Decklan presses the gun to his chest.

“Stay against the wall man, don’t do nothing crazy.” He glares at the doctor. Chris just glares back.

From the streets, Monica watches, leaning against a building with a smirk. As Tobias is dragged away, and Chris is held at gunpoint by Decklan, she turns and walks away.

Everything’s ready to be dealt with.

Out behind the mall, two survivors appear -- Rocky and Thomas. They both look the building up and down, as Rocky heads up to an old, rusted blue metal door atop a small stairwell.

“You sure this is still a good idea?” Thomas asks, looking around, hands in his coat pockets. “How do you know the door is unlocked?”

“I don’t.” Rocky shrugs, fiddling with the doorknob -- and the door does not open. “I might as well check anyways, cause if it’s not… we just kick it open.”

“Kick it open??” Thomas looks up at him. “Dude, that’ll make so much--”

Rocky lifts his leg and slams it against the door a couple of times, knocking it open. It creaks a bit and flies open, slamming into the wall, but not making that loud of a noise as originally expected.

“... nevermind then.” Thomas sighs, going up the stairs to follow Rocky inside.

Rocky takes out a flashlight and looks around, the two finding themselves in a very, very large warehouse in the back of the mall. Shelves upon shelves upon shelves of boxes stretch up towards the very high ceiling, and there’s catwalks overhead, going to other doors and a few ladders that lead to ground level.

“Woof…” Rocky chuckles a bit. “We could… realistically… search this place for weeks. There’s so much here we can loot…”

“Yeah but do we have a way to open them?” Thomas asks. “Ya know… like a crowbar… or maybe a crowbar… how about a crowbar?”

Rocky purses his lips. “Okay, I get it… we need to find tools first. That’ll be our first priority. Happy?”

“I will be when we have enough shit to get home to the family.” Thomas walks past him. “Oh, and Kenny -- he’s doing much better, by the way.”

Rocky follows, smiling. “Yeah, it’s great! I’m so happy that he’s getting better, and maybe he’ll be able to walk again in full, if he--”

“Shh!” Thomas pushes Rocky back, placing a hand on his chest.

There’s talking. Muffled talking.

“Be quiet.” Thomas whispers. “There’s people here.”

“Shit…” Rocky hisses under his breath, shutting off his flashlight and readying his pistol. Thomas mimics the motion.

A door before them opens, and two people step inside in the darkness, flashing a light around.

“Shit, is this a storeroom?” A male voice asks.

A female voice agrees. “It looks big enough to be one--”

“Stop right there.” Thomas suddenly says, holding his pistol up to them in the dark.

“GAH!” The man turns and flashes his light, illuminating the two.

Rocky covers his eyes, before looking back.

He stops, and slowly relaxes.

Two shocked faces are staring back at him.

“Stay right there.” Thomas keeps his finger on the trigger.

“... Chad…?” Rocky breathes, stepping forward. “... E… E-Erika…?”

The flashlight falls from Erika’s hand, and rolls away a bit. Rocky quickly turns his on, fully shining a light on the two familiar faces.

“R-Rocky…??” Chad blinks. “Y-You’re… what?? You… you’re… you’re ALIVE?!”

Thomas lowers his gun in confusion, and looks between them. “... Rock, who the fuck are these people?”

Rocky just walks forward slowly, looking at them. “... is it… really you guys…?”

Erika smiles. “O-Oh my god…!”

She jumps at him and hugs him, surprising Rocky -- more so when Chad joins in, chuckling as he embraces the two.

“Whoa, whoa-- jesus!” Rocky laughs a bit and hugs them back, stepping away. “Where the hell did you guys come from?! You guys are actually okay?! What happened? Where’s everyone else?”

“It’s a crazy story -- but we thought you died!” Erika exclaims. “We thought… we… wait, who’s this?”

They look over at Thomas, who awkwardly and quietly waves a hand.

“Oh, that’s Thomas. He’s… a friend, and one of the reasons I’m still alive.” Rocky explains, looking back at the ginger. “Believe me… I’ve got my own crazy stories to tell.”

“Well, it’s not just us.” Chad smiles. “We’re with a community -- Virgil’s here with us, and Kylie, and Alex, and Kevin -- and we’ve got new people too. It’s great, you should come meet them! We need to let them know you’re alive!”

Rocky grins wide and nods, and the three begin to head back through the door.

Thomas tries to stop him, but to no avail. With a sigh, and a shake of his head, he puts his gun away, grabs the stray flashlight off the floor, and follows them deeper into the mall, closing the door behind him.

There’s a knock at Josephine’s door, and Blaine goes to answer it. The moment he does, he’s greeted by Monica, who smiles pleasantly. With a grin, Parker steps aside and allows the girl in, and he closes the door and guides her to the kitchen. Josephine is there, finishing up some sandwiches, and she smiles.

“Well then, Ms. Styles with all the smiles! What brings you over here?” The woman greets.

“Hey, sorry to come over so suddenly, but I’ve got some great news.” Monica settles down in a chair. “Tobias Lestrade has been arrested, and Chris is under watch.”

Blaine looks a bit shocked. “... what? Monica, really?”

“You’re kidding.” Josephine leans in. “What happened?”

“I asked Warren to deal with that family.” Monica folds her arms. “So… he and Pierce dealt with that family.”

“Well, what about Gina?” Parker presses. “Where’s she…?”

“I pushed her to go out on that supply run. She’s not even in the community.” Monica smirks. “I know that sounds dangerous… but she’s safer out there than she is in here.”

Josephine smiles. “I may have known Toby and Chris for a good while… but they always had something off about them. This is the best news I’ve heard in a good while.”

“I agree…” Blaine nods, smiling gently. “I just… I hope Gina will make it home safe. I’ll feel more at ease when I see her better, instead of just having her be out there.”

“It’s Gina… when she’s on her own, away from family, she’ll kick ass.” Monica smiles.

“Well, I think this calls for a little celebration!” Josephine chuckles. “How about I whip up some soup with these sandwiches? Monica, you care to stay for brunch?”

“If you’ll have me.” Monica smiles and nods.

Parker smiles at the exchange, and turns away to go sit down.

William sits at the table, smiling at him.

Parker frowns, and stops.

“Nobody’s safe… you know that.” William taunts. “Keeping them alive is dangerous… you know that.”

“... get the hell away…” Parker mutters under his breath.

“Face it… nobody will ever, ever be safe… until they’re dead. And I know you want to kill them.” William stands up. “Just like you wanted to kill me.”

GET THE HELL AWAY!!” Parker screams, backing up in fear, and startling both Monica and Josephine.

They both look at him, confused and concerned, and they hurry to his side, but he doesn’t hear what they’re saying.

His heart races.

Sweat runs down his forehead.

His legs buckle, and he falls to the side, and he’s sprawled out on the floor, unconscious.

Pierce walks out of the jailhouse with his father Terrence, to meet Warren on the street. The jailhouse actually is an abandoned police station, refitted to more effectively hold people captive.

Warren folds his arms. “Everything looking good in there?”

“Yup. Decklan’s watching Tobias, he’s locked up in a cell… we’ll feel him every once in a while, and we’ll make sure he doesn’t get anything he can take advantage of.” Terrence nods, smiling at his son. “Take it from a former officer -- I know what I’m doing, and Pierce does too.”

Warren smiles and nods. “Thanks dad. I think we can handle it from here.”

“You betcha.” Terrence nods and walks away. “I gotta go pick up Timmy from the neighbors. You come find me at home if you boys need me, alright?”

The two nod and wave him off, before facing each other. Pierce sighs and adjusts his glasses. “This is going to be very stressful…”

“We’ll, we should handle this ASAP, right?” Warren suggests. “I mean… he’s gonna be a threat, so we need to organize a meeting with the public and have them vote on this. Hell, we need to make this known first.”

“We will, I just have to handle other things first.” Pierce nods.

Warren raises an eyebrow. “... other things?”

Pierce smiles. “There’s other stuff I have to attend to, that’s all.”

Warren purses his lips. “What… IS this other stuff? Does it have anything to do with the supply run? Or Tobias? Or… something else?”

Pierce approaches his brother and puts a hand on his shoulder. “I know you wanted me to have more confidence in my decisions… so, I’ve made my own decision, and I’m running with it as a leader.”

“Oh… uh, that’s good?” Warren tilts his head. “What’s… that decision?”

Pierce chuckles. “Warren… I don’t mean this in a bad way, but if I’m gonna be more competent of a leader, and make my own decisions… then I can’t keep pawning off my position on you.”

“What?” Warren purses his lips again. “Pierce, are you… demoting me?”

“No, no, no.” Pierce shakes his head. “But… you took matters into your own hands with Tobias… so I took matters into my own hands.”

“With WHAT??” Warren presses.

“You’ll see tonight.” Pierce nods, turning to walk away.

Warren watches him go, and he bites his lip. A cold chill runs down his spine, and he instinctively turns to head the other way, going towards the heart of the safe-zone. It’s not long before he sprints into the main hub, where Pierce’s office is. He goes up the stairs and stops in front of the door, checking the knob.

It’s unlocked.

He pushes the door open, and runs to the desk, moving papers around across dry blood stains in order to find… something.

Anything.

Anything at all regarding what Pierce must be planning.

And then, he finds a note on the ground. A slip of paper, sitting on a clipboard. He picks it up, and reads it over.

His eyes narrow.

His blood runs cold.

“... oh… oh fuck…”

“... and that’s how it happened.”

Rocky finishes telling his story, sitting in the food court on the second floor of the mall with the other eleven survivors, as well as Thomas off to the side. Finally, they’re all caught up, and the reunion is over.

There’s only one question left.

“Maybe you guys can come back with us?” Beth asks with a smile. “We can bring everyone to the--”

“No.” Thomas shakes his head. “That’s not an option.”

Rocky sighs and looks up at the ginger. “Thomas, c’mon -- I know these guys, we can--”

“I already told you you can’t go back to the people you know.” Thomas says. “This is supposed to be a secret… I’m only letting this slide because they’re your friends, just this once.”

“Well, look, Mr. Melta…” Virgil stands up. “If you actually do have a family that doesn’t believe in the apocalypse… what makes you think you, alone, can keep them safe from a world they don’t know exists?”

“I’ve been doing good so far… it’s been a rough year, but I’ve made it this long.” Thomas shrugs. “Now, look, Rocky… they’ve clearly got this place handled, so we should go.”

“No.”

Thomas looks at him, and Rocky stands up. “I’m not going anywhere.”

“That’s not part of our deal, Rocky.” Thomas approaches him.

“I’m not your property.” Rocky counters.

“I never said you were.”

“Then let me go and be with my friends.” Rocky gestures to them. “We don’t have to leave just cause they’re here… you don’t have to keep alienating people.”

“Well I can’t be a hermit like my family -- I need to be safe, careful, stealthy… on my own, to do what it takes to survive and protect them!” Thomas shouts.

“Really?? Because by alienating everyone else, you’re just acting like a hermit anyways!” Rocky yells.

“GUYS!” Janice shouts, silencing them.

And it’s only then… the sounds of snarls fill their ears.

“Great… just great.” The woman heads over to look down to the first floor. “We probably drew out some fucking stragglers…”

She trails off.

The others look down.

Groups of walkers begin to pile out, the noise attracting more and more. Slowly, walkers from various hidden crevices and stores and bathrooms, and halls… all come out, and congregate, and begin to shamble around, reaching in the air for them, trying to get up the escalators.

Within seconds, a herd confines them inside.

“Shit… shit shit shit…!” Janice lowers her head. “Fuck…”

“Holy hell…” Ternt shakes his head.

“There’s so many…!” Kylie gasps.

“Where’d they all come from?!” Chad yells.

Virgil, however, just looks around. He squints his eyes down the far end of the food court, toward the back of the mall.

“... alright, I’ve got a plan!” Virgil yells, getting their attention. “We know there’s a storage room with catwalks… so all we need to do is get to the back of the mall, and get up the ladders. They can’t climb, so we can probably just… maneuver around to a fire escape, and get down and out.”

“That can work!” Rocky quickly agrees. “Mr. Black, can we actually get there from here?”

“I don’t know, but maybe we can…” Virgil turns around and stops. “... oh fuck me.”

His shouting draws out more walkers from the stores on the second floor, and they begin to advance towards them. Not a large herd, but a small group of a dozen.

“We can handle them, right?” Trent readies his knife.

Kylie raises her gun. “Of course we can… we just gotta clear a path.”

However, then someone walks ahead of them.

Gina.

Slowly, quietly, she walks over and holds the fire axe.

She shivers a bit, and one walker approaches.

“DIE!!” She screams at the top of her lungs, yelling as she swings the axe across, lodging it in the side of a walker’s head so fiercely she chops it right in half.

She follows up with another swing. Bringing a second walker down and chopping its head in half, she continues to mash the axe into its body, bringing it up and striking down a third.

The group watches as she dodges the walkers and takes them out one by one with the axe. Gina knocks them over and beheads them, kicking the heads away, until she finally flips the last one over the edge of the railing.

She pants, and turns back to them. “... quit standing around, and MOVE YOUR ASSES!! I made you a path, let’s fucking get out of here!”

She starts to run, and Kylie smiles. “... that’s the Gina I remember…”

Everyone quickly follows, Gina leading them to the door at the end of the hall, killing a few stragglers along the way with the axe. Once they reach the door, Gina grabs the handle, but slings the fire axe over her shoulder first, reaching behind her.

“Someone give me a gun.” She orders. “I’m gonna brute force this shit and none of you bitches are stopping me.”

The aggression in her voice is enough to make Kylie quickly give her her pistol. “Go for it girl… you know what you’re doing?”

“Yeah.” Gina pushes the door open. “Saving everyone.”

She runs in and quickly trips walkers on the other side, sending them down some stairs to the floor below. The storage room is mostly empty, but some walkers begin to pile in, already near the back walls and forcing them to go for the nearest ladder.

Gina charges down the stairs, firing at the walkers as they stand up and nailing headshot after headshot, before she jumps off the final step and over the bodies.

“GO, GO, GO!”

She runs for the nearest ladder, and begins climbing up, and the other survivors begin to follow as fast as they can.

The walkers close in, and Chad finds himself having to kill a few -- only for one to grapple onto him.

“SHIT--!!” He feels it chomp down towards his chest, going at his shirt, and in seconds, he notices someone standing there.

Virgil.

Chad’s eyes widen as the man leaves him… only to then, at the last second, raise a pistol, and shoot the walker, narrowly saving Chad’s life.

Chad falls back and pants, and Virgil grabs him by the jacket, pulling him up and running for the ladder.

“Everyone UP! NOW!!” Janice screams, directing the last two up before she follows, barely missing the walkers as they grab at her dangling legs.

Once at the top, all thirteen survivors relax on the catwalk, looking down at the walkers below. They snarl and growl and claw at the air, blood and muck spitting from their undead, detached maws. And yet…

… they’re all, finally, safe.

“Jesus Christ…” Janice relaxes, putting a hand on Gina’s shoulder. “... you did good, you really do have it in ya.”

Gina doesn’t respond, she just turns and walks down the catwalk.

“We need to find a way out of here first. Then we can rest.” Trent says, following her.

“This day could’ve gone way better…” Kevin mutters, glancing over the railing.

Most people begin to follow, and Virgil does as well, until he feels an arm grab him. He turns, to see Chad and Erika standing there.

“Dude.” Chad glares. “I almost died… were you ACTUALLY gonna LEAVE ME??”

“N-No, I just…” Virgil trails off.

“Cut the shit, Virgil -- we know you don’t like us, so don’t try and earn brownie points.” Erika crosses her arms. “What the hell has gotten into you??”

Virgil looks between them, and he sighs, relaxing a bit. And… he smiles. “... I guess, it wouldn’t hurt to tell you guys, since I won’t be around much longer anyways.”

Chad blinks. “... what? Are you…”

“No, I’m not dying.” Virgil shakes his head. “But… I didn’t wanna come on this trip. I was planning on packing up and leaving.”

Erika scoffs. “So… what? You… what does this have to do with--”

“I never liked you guys after you joined the cult, and I never trusted you.” Virgil shakes his head. “I was planning on leaving, since… I clearly am not doing my job protecting Oliver well enough.”

“What the hell are you talking about? You were just gonna leave him?? Kill us?!” Chad exclaims. “What’s going on?!”

Virgil smiles. “I wrote him a letter explaining everything… but, I guess I can’t really leave without telling you guys the truth either. Am I right?”

The two look at each other, then back to Virgil.

He sighs.

“... the truth is…”

Oliver walks up to his house in the safe-zone, and he sees James the guard standing outside.

“Evening, Oliver, welcome back.” He nods. “You doing okay?”

Oliver shrugs. “... I needed to clear my head, after Virgil left. Sorry I took so long.”

James nods. “That’s alright. Sorry to keep waiting here, but… Pierce wants me to keep this house under watch. Nothing against you.”

“No, no, I get it.” Oliver nods. “With what happened… he just wants to be a hundred and ten percent sure. I completely understand.”

James smiles. “Don’t worry, I won’t disturb you. I trust you, and I’m not gonna bother you.”

“Thanks.” Oliver smiles, reaching out to shake his hand.

When he enters the house, Oliver shuts the door behind him and heads to his room to relax, only to see Virgil’s door open. He walks into the room, and looks around, before noticing something on the table.

He picks it up.

A letter, addressed to him on the top line.

Oliver blinks, and begins to read.

Dear Oliver, I’m writing to you in the hopes that you might understand…

He keeps reading.

His grip on the letter tightens.

He furrows his brow.

… leaving the safe-zone…

He shudders.

… can’t protect you…

The letter falls from his hands when he finishes, and he stares at the floor in shock, despair… and anger.

One line, one sentence, one phrase… rolls over and over and over in his head, as he almost collapses.

I have to tell you the truth -- in an effort to protect you, I intentionally shot Wilkes, and it was I who killed Kate’s cult.
